By RICH LEVY
Senator John McCain thinks "we risk losing...everything that we gained" in Iraq, by winding down the war and bringing our troops home. We can assure him and his party, we are losing nothing they "gained" for us, with the war in Iraq.
We still have $800 billion added to our deficit, the cost of the war which would “pay for itself with oil”.
In retaliation for an attack in which they were blameless, we've killed 108,000 Iraqi civilians; they’re still dead, old and young, every one.
The world still watches warily our nation, which gave ultimate power to the foolish and dishonest.
We still have over 4,500 American graves, their namesakes forever gone.
We still have 32,000 seriously wounded troops, with whom we now have a covenant for the duration of their lives.
We have renewed religious bigotry. Hitler ruined the anti-semitism brand, and railing against Catholics is so quaint, it makes one sound like an unpleasantly demented centenarian. But now, in many quarters, religious persecution is okay, when it's Muslims about whom someone shouts.
We have a nation more comfortable with fear. While still technically Americans, we’ve accepted torture as the way; we’ve accepted Big Brother and the corporations working on his behalf; now you can be arrested and locked up indefinitely, no hearing, no trial, just the clank of a metal door slamming shut in your American face. In America.
No, we won't lose what the Iraq war gotten us. Not for a long, long time.| February 2012 | ||||||
