Those Reckless Republicans

Never mind the debt ceiling default date. The recklessness of the Republican political class, in flirting with default, is already being demonstrated itself to the world at large, and the once bedrock underpinnings of our national economy and honor - "the full faith and credit of the United States of America" - is being stressed like never before in our history. The Republicans, by their irresponsible and inflammatory behavior will make the world's investors mistrust America for letting such people near the levers of the economy.

The insane part is, the debt ceiling is about what we have already borrowed and spent, not our future expenditures. It's not about new spending, it's about paying the bills we have already rung up. There is no responsible course but to pay our bills. Allowing nihilistic extremists to influence our economic policy  before the eyes of the world is like sending your home insurance company a photo of your gasoline and paint thinner stored next to your furnace and hot water heater. No, the house isn't in flames yet, but your insurance costs are about to skyrocket!

The only positive thing default may effect, is that it may bring such extreme hardship to most Americans that finally, the poisonously corrupted nature of the Republican party, and how much of our well-being they will sell off for their wealthy owners, will be seared into the flesh and memory of the body politic.
