The Facts May Set Us Free

Researching facts can counter damaging political rhetoric, according to a letter to the editor recently published in the Star Democrat. Good advice.

The writer also mentioned balancing our budget. That needs to be done, but a Constitutional mandate may not be in our best interest. No corporation or nation should be put into the position of being unable to borrow. The 14th Amendment allows our nation to borrow funds when necessary rather than be crippled by an emergency. Imagine not having been able to actively participate in WWII, unable to take on the debt necessary to fund our efforts.

Another letter lamented a lack of appreciation for the wealthy and the jobs they create. Government policies have made wealthy citizens wealthier, but the jobs haven’t materialized. The Wall Street Journal shared that the top three job creators over the past half century were Presidents Clinton, Johnson, and Carter. Reagan was fourth, and Bush last.

Since the Bush tax cuts remain, some might still be expecting them to create jobs. Instead of prosperity, according to the CBO, the cuts were the primary cause of doubling our debt by 2008. We were left with a recession and our lowest tax rates and highest levels of income disparity since the Depression.

Coincidentally, with a little research you will find that Republican leadership, their legislation for tax cuts, and lax regulation preceded both the Great Depression and our current recession.

Perhaps there’s a chance that the facts can set us free from the “job killing” rhetoric.
