Tea Party's Destructiveness Exposed

By MIKE BROWN
We learned long ago that the Tea Party movement was not the "spontaneous grass-roots" phenominon it was being portrayed as, but rather was the creation of and organized, funded, and promoted by right-wing special interests including the Koch brothers and their front organizations such as Americans for Prosperity.
But only now is the full extent of their extremism and destructiveness being exposed during discussions about debt reduction, and it's scaring the heck out of those who previously supported them.  Tea Party Congressional Republicans, including 50 - 100 House members, as well as presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, advocate not raising the debt ceiling and sending our country into default, thus creating a major U.S. and worldwide economic calamity.   Our credit rating would be downgraded, interest rates would skyrocket along with deficits, debt, and unemployment, and we would slide into a major economic depression.
Yet, tea party politicians, including Rep. Andy Harris, say they don't care.  They even say they don't believe it, even though all economists, Wall Street, corporate America (including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce), House and Senate Leaders, and even conservative think tanks are urging them to raise the debt ceiling immediately to avoid economic catastrophe.  They have gone further, signing irresponsible pledges "that make governing, or even thinking, impossible." (David Brooks, conservative columnist, New York Times, July 19).
Tea Party Republicans have proven themselves to be highly reckless and dangerous to our country.  Their breathtaking overreach should be the beginning of the end of the Tea Party movement.
