It appears a sense of sanity is returning to American voters.
The off-year November 8 elections repudiated the attempt of Ohio Governor John Kasich to dismantle unions. It wasn’t close, as voters affirmed the right to collective bargaining and the right to strike in Ohio by a 61-39 count. This overwhelming snub of Republicans has given impetus to the recall of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who shares the “values” of Kasich.
Mississippi’s controversial “personhood” initiative, which would have criminalized miscarriages, abortions, in-vitro fertilization and several forms of birth control, was rejected even in this deeply red state by a decisive 58-42 margin.
A Democrat, Steve Beshear, was elected as governor in heavily red state Kentucky, the home of Mitch McConnell. Maine voters repudiated a Republican law that would have ended same-day voter registration, undoing a GOP overreach with the “people’s veto.” Arizona’s state Senate President Russell Pearce, author of the state’s vicious “papers please” immigration law, was recalled as sanity prevailed in Arizona, John “build the dang fence” McCain’s state. Democrats preserved their senate majority in Iowa in a special election engineered by the state’s Republican governor.
The Tea Party (ergo GOP) disdain for evidence and compassion resemble the old Marxists, who discounted actual experience. The American Communist Party of yore, in their manifesto, “believed in the party line so completely, that we’d forget the larger strategy for the momentary tactic.” The shrinking Tea Party may still believe in this inflexibility, but they were soundly defeated by a clear-thinking electorate November 8. Take note, Andy Harris.
