Pro-Business Obama

I was dismayed to see grumpy George Will (in the Sunday May 15 Star Democrat) once again attacking the president -- who saved the American auto industry -- as an enemy of business. Let's not forget that it was Republicans who were willing to see Chrysler, General Motors and all their manufacturing jobs disappear.  And it was President Obama who continued what Hank Paulson had started --  keeping those lying ingrate bankers on Wall Street solvent during the crisis of 2008-09.  Has George Will not seen stock values soaring during the Obama presidency?  Isn't he himself wealthier as a result of the confidence Obama has restored to the market?

The president is no enemy of business, but he does want it to act in a responsible way. Republicans want to shrink the government to the point that it offers citizens no protection and no services. They want the international corporations -- who fund their candidates, set their policies and quite literally write their laws -- to be able to do whatever they like without any accountability.  Unfortunately, we know that left unchecked, they'll poison the environment (Love Canal, fracking, BP), they'll ruin children's health (soda and fast-food ads aimed at children, importing lead-tainted toys from China), and they'll let people die rather than honor insurance claims.

It's not being "anti-business" to insist that business follow common-sense regulations for the common good.
