By FRANK LAWLOR
A little boy was watching the parade with his parents and thousands of grown-ups. The emperor was marching by. Suddenly the little boy cried out the truth which all the big folks knew but ignored: "Look, the emperor is naked!" he said to the great annoyance of the adults.
This old folk parable has been very justly used to describe what is happening in our nation now. The little boy is the thousands of mostly young protestors known as the "99 Percenters." For a long time the somber, meek, silent grown-ups watched as a tiny percentage of our citizens have gobbled up a huge portion of the national wealth. Meanwhile, the old blue-collar middle class, hard-working folks who with unionization had achieved a place at the table of prosperity, found their wages frozen for almost 30 years. The old American dream was for a few very lucky heirs.
Recently this silent majority watched the parade of financial inequality reach a point where their elected legislators dropped the final axe giving the wealthy top 1 percent a gigantic tax immunity. These bought and paid-for minions in Congress reached out to make their great gift to the oligarchs into a permanent taxless entitlement. Then they proposed in the Ryan Plan to soon eliminate the right of the middle class underlings to collect the Social Security and Medicare pittance that they had already paid for while working in wage-frozen jobs. Amazingly, the great crowd of the screwed majority watched this parade in mute acceptance.
Suddenly the unbelievable silence of the 99 percent has been violated in cities across the nation. The naked power grab of the privileged few has been called to the everyone's attention. Those wedded to power do not like this cry of truth spoken to power. Look at the outrage in the cartoon in our own Sunday Star. Read the outrage in the "humor" column in Friday's Star Democrat mocking the "protestors" who would dare speak truth against nakedness. Watch the scorn of the debaters who despise the cry of truth exposing the naked emperor.
