Harris Violates Pledges

Rep. Andy Harris didn't waste any time violating his physician's pedge to "do no harm", voting in January to harm millions of Americans by repealing the Affordable Care Act.  Now he's done it again, this time voting to harm millions of seniors, including many thousands of Marylanders, by voting for the Paul Ryan 2012 budget which abolishes Medicare and Medicaid, without even considering superior less harmful Medicare reform approaches like ACA measures, capitation and means testing.

For those now under 55, Harris wants to end Medicare's guaranteed health care, instead offering seniors modest vouchers to help them pay for private insurance or health care when private companies refuse to insure them.  He claims this will give seniors more choice.  Choice of what?  Millions of seniors with pre-existing conditions (like being older) won't be able to find a single company willing to risk insuring them at any price.

The CBO estimates these vouchers will lose value over time, and by 2030 the average senior will have to cover two-thirds of his/her medical costs.  Millions of seniors will be unable to afford these costs, and will go without needed care, suffering and dying as a result.

Harris falsely claimed he kept his pledge to protect current seniors' benefits.  He voted to cut Medicaid that pays seniors' nursing home costs, reinstitute the annual $5,000 doughnut hole burden, and shorten the financially healthy life of Medicare ten years.

Maryland seniors and future seniors won't forget this on election day 2012.
