Rep. Andy Harris's December 8 press release presents another false assertion comparable to his absurd claim that he has protected Medicare and seniors' health benefits. In demanding that the Keystone XL Pipeline, which would run from Canada through the U.S. to the Gulf, be approved immediately (benefitting their Big Oil contributors) in exchange for their votes to extend payroll tax cuts (benefitting many millions of workers), Harris and his House Republican cronies claim that the pipeline will create 130,000 jobs immediately and boost our economy. That claim is false.
U.S. State Department analysis found the pipeline project would provide at most 5,000 - 6,000 temporary jobs, most non-local.
Cornell University's Global Labor Institute's study found the project would develop between 2,500 and 4,650 jobs, most temporary and from outside the region, and concluded that "KXL will not be a major source of U.S. jobs, nor will it play any substantial role in putting Americans back to work."
Trans Canada, the Canadian company that would build the pipeline, indicates local hires would be about 15% and only a few hundred jobs would be permanent.
When confronted with such facts, key Republicans moonwalked their projections back to 60,000 jobs (still too high by an order of magnitude) to avoid being caught in yet another lie but still refusing to accept factual numbers, possibly due to their anti-science/analysis views.
These facts are easily available via Google searches to Harris and other Republicans who actually care about the truth.
